I know I am a little bit behind the times, but I was able to watch Match Point last night and I liked it a great deal. Everyone in my family had told me to watch it and they all raved about it so I figured why not. I like Woody Allen and anything with Scarlett Johannsson is worth watching.
I am going to assume that you have seen it, but if you have not been able to watch Allen's brilliant t story telling, don't read because there are a number of things mentioned below which will ruin the ending for you.
The film made me think about what is truly important in a relationship: happiness or security. This was the same struggle the main character had. One question that they film never answers is: Was he in a loving relationship or a lustful relationship with the Scarlett Johansson character? That is, was he attracted to her only physically, or was he genuinely interested in engaging in a relationship outside of his own marriage because his own wife was dull and predictable.
I thought for certain he was going to get caught when he killed the people, but then I remembered that my brother told me it was very close to the earlier Woody Allen film,
"Crimes and Misdemeanors" and I remembered that Martin Landau gets away with it in the end.
Back to "Match Point": I think we are to believe that the dead, (his girlfriend and his girlfriend's neighbor) are in a better place, and though their death's are wrong and shocking, they will never have to experience mortal pain or anguish, in short they are in a better place.
He will have to live with his actions for as along as he breathes air. I also think that he is meant to do good. Who knows if he will loan a friend a great deal of money or someday his son may invent the cure to cancer, but the moral is that he will suffer by stayting married to his wife, dream of Scarlett and know that he killed the only woman he truly loved/was attracted to.
He wanted the high life and now he is subjected to a life of mediocrity and boredom with his expensive house and his boring job and silly wife.
I liked this movie as much as "Crimes and Misdemeanors" because it was very well acted out and really took you inside the privileged world of the British upper class.
I secretly hated his wife and her annoying walk, look, presence and quips. Her demands were even worse when she declares to him point blank, "I want you to get me pregnant. I want to have three children."
That's why I think it is justice that he stays with her. He thought he would be riding the high life for marrying into money, but it is really he who has been handcuffed with their ways. He is reaping the rewards of a certain style of living, but they have him by the balls with their demands for offspring.
I also really liked that Scarlett appeared to him along with the neighbor and he got to explain to them why he did what he did. It’s takes us inside the mind of a killer and lets us all know what we are capable of. It's also amazing how we cheer for him in the end. We don't really want him to get caught. He has done wrong and taken life. But we have seen him rise and even the thought of his demise leaves us hoping for his victory.
I would be interested in seeing a follow up film, where he and his wife cheat on each other after several more years in a love-less marriage and him finally coming clean to her regarding the murders.
